A Spartan C-27J transport military plane of the Bulgarian Air Force made an emergency landing at Sofia International Airport, the Defense Ministry announced.

The incident occurred on Wednesday and was officially reported Thursday afternoon.

During a training flight, the crew of the Spartan C-27J plane found a critical problem with the left engine, and decided to land the aircraft immediately.

The emergency landing was successful with one functional engine, and the crew and the aircraft landed safe and sound, the Defense Ministry said.

Bulgarian Defense Minister Anyu Angelov has appointed a special commission to investigate the causes of the incident.

The Bulgarian military purchased three military transport planes Spartan C-27J from Italian company Alenia Aeronautica in 2010-2011.
