A 3km stretch of the western arc of the Sofia ring road is to be built with around BGN 60M and two other projects are to be launched by end-2013, according to Regional Development Minister Lilyana Pavlova, who attended Wednesday the sod-turning ceremony with Transport Minister Ivaylo Moskovski .

The main portion of the expenses is covered under the EU Transport Operational Program with co-financing from the state budget and the projects are to be wrapped up in 22 months, according to dnevnik.bg.

The investment in the construction works amounts to nearly BGN 50 M and a separate BGN 12M have been paid for land expropriation.

According to Pavlova, although the road section is only 3km long, it is very important.

The project also envisages repair works at three facilities on the section, the most important of the three being the construction of a three-level road junction on the Slivnitsa Blvd.

In Pavlova's words, the road section will channel traffic both to the Kalotina border crossing and the other part of the Sofia ring road, "which is essential for transit traffic.

The construction of two more projects in the region of the Sofia ring road is to start by the spring of 2013.

In September 2012, tenders will be opened for a Sofia-Kalotina high speed road and for a northern arc of the Sofia ring road.

According to Bulgaria's Regional Development Minister, the completion of the projects will connect the Sofia ring road to the Hemus and Trakia highways.

Under preliminary calculations, the total value of the projects stands at BGN 200 M, but the tenders are expected to lower the price.

Bulgaria's Prime Minister Boyko Borisov and Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova were expected to attend Wednesday's sod-turning ceremony, but failed to appear.
