Bulgarian Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikolay Mladenov has sent a letter of deep condolences on the recent passing of leading ethnic Albanian Macedonian politician Arben Xhaferi.

"Arben Xhaferi will be remembered for his progressive ideas and positive vision for the future. He worked constructively for the future of Macedonia as a functioning democracy," said Mladenov in a letter to Democratic Party of Albanians leader Menduh Thaci.

Xhaferi, who passed away from cerebral hemorrhage in a Skopje hospital Wednesday, created and for 14 chaired the Democratic Party of Albanians.

In 2001, he took active part in drafting and implementing the Ohrid Accord that ended an exchange of violent hostilities between Macedonia's ethnic Albanians and Slavs.

"As his legacy, Mr. Xhaferi leaves an example of political leadership and defense of human rights for all citizens, irrespective of their ethnicity and religion," states Bulgarian Foreign Minister Mladenov in his letter.

Mladenov further asks Thaci to send his deepest condolences to the family and friends of Xhaferi, with whose death, says the minister, Bulgaria loses "a good and respected friend."
