Average Bulgarian Household's Income Up 14% Q2 2012 Y/Y

The average total income per household member in Bulgaria in the second quarter of 2012 was BGN 1071 which is an increase of 13.8% compared to the same period of 2011.

The data was released Thursday by the Bulgarian National Statistics Institute, NSI.

Wages and salaries continue to be the main source of household income. The relative share of household income from wages and salaries is 54.5%. In the second quarter of 2012, this income was BGN 583 per capita, which is an increase of 18.0%, compared to the same quarter of 2011. The relative share of wages and salaries within the total income has increased by 2 percentage points.

The second important source of household income is the income from pensions. The relative share of pensions within the total income decreased by 3.3 percentage points and became 26.7%. In the second quarter of 2012, the income from pensions was BGN 286 per capita and increased by 1.4% compared to the second quarter of 2011.

The income from self-employment increased in the second quarter of 2012 compared to the same period of 2011 and became BGN 81 per capita. Its relative share within the total income decreased by 0.4 percentage points and was 7.6%.

The importance of other social income for the formation of the total household income was relatively insignificant in the second quarter of 2012. In the observed period, this income increased from BGN 32 to BGN 35 while its relative share remained the same 3.3%.

The relative share of monetary income into the total income in the second quarter of 2012 was similar to the same quarter of 2011 and was 98.1%.

The total expenditure per household member in the second quarter of 2012 was BGN 967 Levs and increased by 11.2% compared to the same quarter of 2011. Expenditures on food and housing (energy, fuel and water) had the greatest share in forming the total expenditure and constituted 51.3% of the total expenditures.

The most significant part in the household budget was the expenditure on food and non-alcoholic beverages. An increase of 5.4% in absolute values was observed which means that the average expenditure on food and non-alcoholic beverages was BGN 333 per household member in the second quarter of 2012. This relative share represented 34.5% in total expenditures and decreased by 1.9 percentage points in comparison with the same quarter of the previous year.

The expenditure on housing (water, electricity, heating, furnishing and maintenance) increased from BGN 135 per capita in the second quarter of 2011 to BGN 162 in the same quarter of 2012. The relative share also increased by 1.2 pp and was 16.8% of the total expenditures.

The expenditure on health was on the same level of BGN 51 per capita in the second quarter of 2012 as it was in the same quarter of 2011. The relative share within the total expenditures decreased by 0.5 percentage points and was 5.3%.

The expenditure on transport and communication as absolute value increased by 15.4%, and became BGN 111 per capita. The relative share increased by 0.5 percentage points and was 11.6% of the total household expenditures.

The expenditure on alcoholic beverages and tobacco increased by 14.3% and was BGN 44 average per capita in the second quarter of 2012. The relative share of the total expenditures was 4.6% or increased by 0.1 percentage points compared to the second quarter of 2011.

The expenditure on clothing and footwear in the second quarter of 2012 was almost at the same level as in 2011 – BGN 28 per capita. Its relative share represented 2.9% of the total expenditures or 0.2 percentage points less compared to the second quarter of 2011.

The average consumption of main food products per capita did not change significantly in the second quarter of 2012 compared to the second quarter of 2011. An increase was observed in the consumption of fruits - from 5.9 kg to 6.4 kg, yoghurt - from 7.3 kg to 8.4 kg and feta cheese - from 2.9 kg to 3.1 kg. Consumption of bread and paste products decreased from 26.2 kg to 24.9 kg.
