Bulgaria's Interior Ministry will increase the number of traffic control cameras mounted on highways, roads and streets from 22 to 173.

The eight-fold increase in stationary traffic monitoring devices was reported Wednesday by private TV station bTV.

All of the 173 cameras are to be installed by end-2013.

The devices will be mounted on roads and streets where many casualties occur.

The southwestern district of Blagoevgrad will get the highest number of new cameras, 22.

Varna, Montana and Silistra will get 2 cameras each.

A total of 6 cameras will be installed on the three highways - Hemus, Trakia and Maritsa.

Bulgaria currently has 22 traffic control cameras.

According to bTV, public procurement contracts show that the cost of one traffic monitoring device is around BGN 50 000.
