Australia has announced a recall of some 23 000 cars produced by Chinese brands Great Wall and Chery due to asbestos having been found in certain vehicles.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has explained that the asbestos is located in the engine and exhaust gaskets, Auto World News informs.

Consumers are not at risk when using the vehicles, but are discouraged from working on them themselves.

The recall follows an investigation that was launched when officers from Australia's Customs and Border Protection detected asbestos in imported spare parts.

Great Wall Motors entered EU's market in 2006 and the Australian market in 2008.

On February 21 2012, the Chinese automaker inaugurated its first plant in Bulgaria and Europe. Bulgarian company Litex Motors and its Chinese partner Great Wall Motors plan to produce 50 000 cars per year within five years.

Chery is a state-owned brand founded in 1997 that produces cars, SUVs, and minivans.
