Three people are reported dead after a gunman opened fire and killed a police officer and a civilian near a university campus in Texas in the US.

The attack happened in College Station city, near the Texas A&M University at about 12:45 pm local time.

Police said the gunman was shot and killed. The authorities have yet to establish a motive for the shooting and it is not yet known if the attacker was a student at the university.

The policeman who died was serving an eviction notice when the suspect opened fire, according to local media reports.

Five people had been admitted to the College Station Medical Center emergency room, including three people with gunshot wounds.

Three police officers were injured as well as a woman, who was undergoing surgery at a local hospital.

Most of the 50 000 students were not on campus on Monday, as the autumn term does not begin until later this month.

The latest shooting comes on the heels of an attack at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin that killed six people and a mass shooting at a Colorado movie theater in which 12 people died.
