Bug Company and the New Ohio present The Eyes of Others

The Eyes of Others is an exciting and provocative new Bulgarian play by the young writer Ivan Dimitrov. Bug Company is producing the play this September, presented by the New Ohio Theatre to open their 2012-13 season.

The Eyes of Others will be the second show for Bug Company— the first, in 2010, was Hater, director Samuel Buggeln's translation of Le Misanthrope.  Hater was a big success: the show got amazing press from The New York Times, The New Criterion, and lots of other places, and the text is about to be published in a national journal of theatre translation.

We're every bit as excited about The Eyes of Others.  It's an unexpected treat of a play; it may be the first Bulgarian play to receive a major production in NYC. Ivan is writing old-school absurdism (think the "clown" side of Beckett), but he's thinking about consumer culture, global capitalism, surveillance—the big questions of our time—and he does it all without ever losing his distinctive off-center humor.

We have amazing collaborators on this project.  We got to know the play through the international theatre series hotINK at the Lark, and hotINK is finding the funding for Ivan's travel to the US for rehearsals.  Most awesomely, though, the New Ohio Theatre is presenting this play to open the first full season in their beautiful new theatre.  It's an amazing opportunity for Bug Company, and now we need to raise the funds to round out the project's budget.

What We Need & What You Get

We need $6000 to hold up our end of the bargain:

Rehearsal space, costumes, set materials and construction, stipends for the terrific artists that Bug Company brings together, and (one of the biggest costs these days) a publicist to get the word out about the work we're making: it adds up fast.

And it sounds like a lot of money, but our friends and supporters rallied around for Hater, and we know we can do it again.

We have great incentives for every level of support.  We'd like to point out one special one: for folks in the NYC area who can donate at the $125 level, our dear friends Carlynn Houghton and Simon Pratt are throwing a glamorous cocktail party at their home.  They did this for Hater, and if you were there, you know that there was a bit of a sneak-preview performative element to the evening.  And that's all we're going to  say about that.

(By the way, if you want to donate at that level or above but can't make it to the event, you can transfer the invitation to a friend, or failing that, let us know and we will extend the invitation to a semi-starving artist whom we love to have at parties, and that glamorous person will solemnly raise a glass to your health.)

But please remember, our bread and butter also comes in the form of all those $50, $25, and $5 donations.  They really do add up, and if three digits are too rich for your blood right now, we hope you'll chip in at a level that's right for you.

Help us get the word out

We totally understand if it's a lousy time for you to contribute dollars.  That doesn't mean you can't help us out!  There are buttons at the top for "liking" us on the FB and for emailing this link to folks you think might want to know about this project.  Whether you donate or not, we hope you'll click one or both of them!

We need your support so can keep delivering news and information about Bulgaria! Thank you!
