Inspectors from the regional unit of the National Revenue Agency (NRA) in Varna have started mass inspections of grain storage and grain trading sites.
The 137 inspections are being carried out by NRA staff, police officers, and representatives of the National Grains Service, according to a media statement of the NRA, as cited by the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency (BTA).
The raids are aimed at curbing attempts at VAT evasion.
The inspections will cover 78 sites in Varna and the region, 19 in Dobrich, 13 in Silistra, 10 in Shumen, 8 in Ruse, 5 in Targovishte and 4 in Razgrad.
If the revenue authorities detect irregularities, the inspections will turn into audits including all participants in the commercial chain, starting with the ports from which the grains were exported.
In the first six months of 2012, NRA inspectors in Varna completed 69 audits of grain producers and traders, uncovering VAT fraud to the tune of BGN 13 M.
