The second line of the subway of Bulgaria's capital Sofia will be officially launched on August 31, in the presence of the President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso.
The news was announced Monday by the Mayor of Sofia, Yordanka Fandakova. Fandakova and Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, inspected a section of the metro line under the "Cherni Vrah" boulevard. Sofia's second metro diameter will connect the Nadezhda residential district to the boulevard.
The officials traveled during the inspection from the European Union station (near the Museum of Earth and People) to the National Palace of Culture one and then back to the last stop on "James Bourchier" boulevard, where there is a parking lot for 620 vehicles.
Borisov commented that the subway will spare a huge amount of gasoline, will ease traffic and open parking spaces in downtown Sofia.
"This dream of Sofia residents will materialize in 17 days. We are chasing away construction workers next Monday to begin testing of trains, tracks and stations," said he.
The PM further informed he will try to convince Barroso to use savings from the construction to invest in connecting the Sofia International Airport to the subway and build one more stop after the one on "James Bourchier" boulevard.
The launch of the second metro diameter will coincide with the opening of the beautiful Largo in the heart of the capital.
