Bulgaria's Burgas Was Most Visited Tourist Destination in June

In June 2012, a total of 2300 hotels, motels, camping sites, chalets and other types of short-term accommodation facilities with over 10 beds functioned in Bulgaria, according to data of the National Statistical Institute (NSI).

The 2300 accommodation sites had 114.6 thousand rooms and 242.1 thousand bed places.

Compared to May 2012, the number of accommodation sites increased by 19.0%, while the number of bed places went up by 29.2%.

At the beginning of the summer season, the occupancy rate at the accommodation sites spiked by 86.2% to 709.5 thousand arrivals month on month.

The holidaymakers spend a total of 3.12 million nights in Bulgarian accommodation establishments, 680.2 thousand of them booked by Bulgarian nationals and 2.44 million by foreigners.

The largest number of accommodation sites and the largest number of arrivals was registered in the district of Burgas.

The Black Sea city of Burgas offered 404 accommodation sites.

Burgas and the nearby resorts attracted 208 610 tourists who spent 1.37 million nights, 1.2 million of them booked by foreigners.

Varna came second in the ranking, with 289 accommodation establishments and 163 000 tourists.

Bulgaria's capital, Sofia, came third in the ranking, with a total of 68 551 visitors.

Hotels' occupancy rate was 46.1%, the highest rates registered in 4-5-star hotels (60%), followed by 3-star hotels (48.3%) and 1-2-star hotels (25.7%).

Luxury hotels in Bulgaria mostly accommodate foreigners, while Bulgarians usually go for middle- or low-class facilities.

4-5-star hotels had 56.7% of the overnight stays booked by foreigners and 25.2% by Bulgarians.

3-star accommodation sites had 34.1% of the overnight stays booked by foreigners and 32.1% by Bulgarians, while 1-2 star establishments welcomed 9.2% of foreigners and 42.7% of Bulgarians.

Foreigners stayed for an average 5.8 nights in Bulgaria, while Bulgarians spent an average of 2.4 nights on holiday.

The total revenues from nights spent in accommodation establishments in Bulgaria reached BGN 115.5 M, of which BGN 92.6 M were spent by foreigners and BGN 22.9 M by Bulgarians.

In the period January-June 2012, total revenues increased by 14.5% as compared to the same period of 2011, with foreigners generating a 19.6% growth and Bulgarians a growth of 11.8%.

In the period January-June 2012, the number of overnight stays in all Bulgaria-based accommodation establishments went up by 7.4% from January-June 2011, with overnight stays of foreigners growing by 7.3% and of Bulgarians by 7.5%.
