Annan Backs Off from Syria as Tension Escalates

Former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has decided to step down as UN and Arab League to civil war torn Syria, announced UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

"It is with great regret that I am announcing Annan's resignation," stated Ban Thursday.

The ex UN Secretary General tried to implement a peace plan between the government of President Bashar Al-Assad and militant rebels.

"I did not receive the entire support that the cause deserved. There is division in the international community," stated Annan at a last-minute press conference.

In the meanwhile, extremely heavy fighting is reported to be continuing in Syria's largest city Aleppo between the army and armed rebel militias.

Thursday the CNN has reported that US President Barack Obama has authorized US governmenta agencies, including the CIA to offer logistical help to rebels.

Also Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin visited UK PM David Cameron in London to discuss the escalating violence in Syria.
