Regional Development Minister Lilyana Pavlova has explained that 1000 km of second and third class roads are being repaired.

In a Thursday interview for the morning broadcast of the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) she highlighted that the government had not focused all efforts on the construction of highways and first-class roads.

She announced that the repair works of three dangerous viaducts would start in September, provided that the tender for the selection of contractors was not appealed.

The Regional Development Minister made clear that the bids of the 9 companies and consortiums would be reviewed on August 18.

Pavlova said that the authorities had introduced speed restrictions for the three viaducts to ensure better safety standards.

She added that no other measures were necessary at that stage.

Pavlova noted that the traffic at the viaducts would be stopped in stages to cause minimal disruptions.

The Regional Development Minister went on to say that four Bulgarian municipalities had received BGN 16 M to build homes for the Roma population.

She stressed that the aim was to get the Roma to participate in the construction works and undertake a commitment that they would send their children to school and pay their bills.
