Bulgaria will have the opportunity to absorb BGN millions in EU funding for education, science and sports in the next program period 2014 – 2020.

The government is even considering to slate the said funding for education, science and innovations into a separate operational program, says the Bulgarian EU Funds Minister Tomislav Donchev.

Bulgaria can negotiate anywhere between BGN 600 M and BGN 1.5 B, but the total used amount will depend on the projects that would be submitted by the academic community to the EU Funds Ministry by September 2012, according to Donchev.

The financing can be also used to complete the Sofia Tech Park project, along with similar projects in the farming, maritime, energy and machine construction sectors. The Minister stated that Bulgaria has the potential to have 2-3 technology parks.

He stressed that the lack of enough planned funding for education and science in the current program period is a huge mistake, nearly comparable to crime.

The second mistake, according to the Minister, is the lack of financing of sports facilities, leading to the overload of existing ones.

Donchev explained that the funds for education and sports would not be at the expense of those for building infrastructure, daycare centers and hospitals.
