7 Bulgarian Athletes Featured in Day 1 of London Olympics

Seven Bulgarian athletes are taking part Saturday in the first day of the 2012 London Olympic Games, which were opened with a lavish ceremony Friday evening.

The start of Bulgaria's participation was given at 10:30 am by Petya Lukanova who took part in the qualifier for 10-meter air rifle target shooting. The finals will be held at 1 pm Saturday.

At 12 noon, two Bulgarian cyclists, Danail Petrov and Spas Gyurov, started their race in the 250-kilometer cycling in Southwest London.

The Bulgarian participation in boxing begins at 3:30 pm with the World Champion 2009 from Milano, Detelin Darakliev, in the 56-kg category.

At that same hour, Tsvetana Pironkova will start in the first round of the female tennis tournament. Pironkova, who is a former Wimbledon semi-finalist, was unlucky in the draw and will have to face the number 12 in the world, the Czech Dominika Cibulkova

Also at 3:30 pm, Bulgaria's male tennis star, Grigor Dimitrov, will play against Pole Lukasz Kubot, whom he defeated one week ago at the Allianz Suisse Open in Gstaad.

Legendary Bulgarian gymnast, Yordan Yovchev, who is the first male gymnast to compete in six Olympic Games, will end the country's first day of competition with the qualifications in his sport, scheduled for 10 pm.
