The terrorist attack at the Burgas Sarafovo airport is a shock and huge surprise for Bulgarians, the American Ambassador in Sofia, James Warlick, says.

Speaking Wednesday, in an interview for the private TV channel bTV, the diplomat expressed condolences to the families of the victims.

The July 18 terrorist attack in Bulgaria's Burgas, also known as the Burgas Bus Bombing, killed 5 Israeli tourists and a Bulgarian bus driver at the Sarafovo Airport.

The Ambassador explained that there are hundreds of people with looks similar to the ones of the alleged suicide bomber and such attack can happen at any airport in the US. He stressed the Bulgarian authorities are examining even the smallest details and are working thoroughly and consistently on the case.

"Slightly after the attack, US President, Barack Obama, called Bulgarian Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, to express condolences and voice support. He then sent to Bulgaria the White House Counter-Terrorism Chief John Brennan. At this point of the probe, one must follow all leads and traces and believe that the perpetrators will face justice," said Warlick.

The Ambassador pointed out that airports and public buildings must have high-level of protection against terrorism, adding the fight against it is also the responsibility of every citizen. He advised Bulgarians to be vigilant and report any suspicious items and activities because police cannot cover all public spaces.

"Terror attacks can happen everywhere and anywhere and we must be prepared to deal with them," the diplomat reiterated.

Regarding Israeli claims that Iran and Lebanese militant group Hezbollah played a role, he underlined that no one wants to start a war with Iran, and the only requirement is for the latter to adhere to international commitments.

"The Middle East is dangerous enough now; there is enough violence. I don't think there is need to point the finger at someone, but to rather establish all facts and, hopefully, identify, the perpetrators of the attack," Warlick told the host.

The Ambassador explained that Hezbollah are known to be behind many terrorist attacks across the globe, but stressed he was not in any way claiming that they are to be blamed for the one in Burgas. He stated that the US is offering and will offer any assistance, but will let the Bulgarian authorities do their job.
