Nearly 80% of Bulgarians Unable to Save EUR 1

Nearly 80% of Bulgarians admit they cannot save as much as EUR 1 and the same percentage of people feel insecure in their jobs, according to a survey of International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) conducted among citizens of different European countries.

The results were announced by Sharan Burrow, ITUC General Secretary, after a Wednesday press conference on job creation in Bulgaria organized by the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB) and the Podkrepa Labor Confederation.

Burrow took part in a two-day forum organized by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Sofia on issues of employment and incomes.

CITUB President Plamen Dimitrov insisted that the government and trade unions had to reach an agreement in the next few months on measures to stimulate economic growth while maintaining financial stability.

Dimitrov claimed that if no growth measures were negotiated, the frozen incomes and the increased prices of energy sources would lead to a social explosion.

Burrow backed the demands of the CITUB for increased minimum wages, pensions and budget salaries.

The CITUB President also called for preferential loans to small and medium-sized enterprises operating in the developing sectors and for using EUR 500 M available under the Competitive Power Operational Program to generate growth.

According to the forecast of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Europe is to expect a negative economic growth of -0.3% in 2013.
