Quake-Hit Bulgarian Town Enraged over No Expert Inspections

People from the Iztok district of Bulgaria's Southwestern mining town of Pernik have expressed concerns about the condition of buildings in the aftermath of the latest earthquake that rattled the town.

Approximately 10 apartment buildings in the district have cracks in their supporting structures, walls and terraces, the BGNES news agency informs.

People are worried, since no construction experts have visited their homes to assess whether they are safe.

According to local media, the citizens have threatened to block major roads if a team of experts does not visit the area.

A 4.5-degree earthquake hit Bulgaria's western Pernik region Saturday. The tremor is believed to be an aftershock of a larger 5.8-degree earthquake that shook the area May 22.

The second quake is believed to have worsened the condition of some buildings that sustained damages back in May.

Back in 2007, a truck loaded with ammonite exploded near the Republika coal mine, some 1 km away from Pernik's Iztok district, also causing damages to some buildings.
