Italy's PM Mario Monti has spoken out against what he sees as divisive positions of some EU member states regarding building a stronger fiscal and economic union.

"Some northern countries that publicly put under questions fundamental aspects of the last European Council are undermining trust in the eurozone," stated Monti, as reported by agencies.

The Italian PM further called for swift Union-level actions to be taken to resolve the financial crisis in the EU.

Although Monti did not name countries, he might have been provoked by a recent statement by Finnish FinMin Jutta Urpilainen, who said that Finland would rather exit the eurozone than bailout financially troubled countries.

In the past, the government of the Netherlands has also voiced reservations about strengthening the EU's joint financial rescue mechanisms.
