UN Endorses Freedom of Online Expression

The UN Human Rights Council has endorsed a resolution upholding the principle of freedom of expression and information on the Internet.

Thus, UN's human rights body has declared for the first time that people a right to freedom of expression on the Internet.

"It's the first ever U.N. resolution affirming that human rights in the digital realm must be protected and promoted to the same extent and with the same commitment as human rights in the physical world," Eileen Donahoe, Ambassador for Washington, has told reporters.

The resolution was presented by Brazil, Nigeria, Sweden, Tunisia, Turkey and the United States.

In speeches, both China and Cuba voiced reservations, but joined the consensus.
