The Cypriot EU Presidency hopes that Bulgaria and Romania will join the Schengen Agreement in September, a Cypriot diplomat has told the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency.

The diplomat has pointed out that Cyprus itself is yet to fulfill the criteria required for a Schengen entry. However, he believes that his country will join the European border-free zone, too.

Cyprus has already declared that its EU Presidency will work towards Bulgaria and Romania's Schengen accession. The Foreign Ministers of Bulgaria, Romania and Cyprus recently met to discuss the issue.

The Cypriot diplomat has further stated that his country should be ready for a potential humanitarian crisis caused by the situation in Syria.

At the beginning of March, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte reiterated that his government was not against the Bulgaria and Romania joining Schengen, but wanted absolute guarantees they would be applying the Schengen criteria.

In February, the interim Co-operation and Verification Mechanism report registered Romania's progress in combating organized crime and corruption, but demanded stronger action from Bulgaria.
