Bulgarian Liberals Call for Obligatory Voting

Marginal Bulgarian liberal party National Movement for Stability and Prosperity has proposed the introduction of obligatory voting in the country's electoral legislation.

NMSP believes the move will decrease the harmful effect of the notorious "vote buying" practices in the country.

"NMSP proposes a national referendum on obligatory voting. Let Bulgarians decide for themselves. We believe that compulsory voting can be e temporary measure that is to last until our country exits the crisis and the government copes with the shadow economic sector, which is currently the largest in the EU," the party says in a letter to President Rosen Plevneliev.

"We are ready to temporary restrict the liberty of whether people vote or not in exchange for Bulgaria's liberty of having a clear and honest choice of its next government."

NMSP failed to gather enough votes to pass the 4% barrier required for entering the Bulgarian Parliament back in 2008.

The country's next general elections are to take place in 2013.
