A Bulgarian was arrested in Austria after authorities discovered large amount of heroin in his tractor trailer in January. File photo.

An Austrian court has acquitted a Bulgarian truck driver of trafficking a total of 130 kg of heroin worth an estimated EUR 50 M.

There was no hard evidence of the Bulgarian man's guilt, the Focus news agency reports, citing ORF.

The prosecutors have decided not to appeal the court ruling.

Austrian Customs officers discovered 130 kilos of heroin in a truck driven by the Bulgarian citizen in January. This was the largest seizure of heroin ever made in a single customs check in Austrian history.

Back in January, authorities said they believed the heroin was destined for the Netherlands and had to pass through the so-called "Balkan route." A second truck was allegedly supposed to join in to divert attention and serve as cover-up.
