The Bulgarian State pays over BGN 3 M a year in damages caused by mistakes of the prosecution and over wrongly charged citizens.

The later can sue the State under the Act for Responsibilities of the State and the Municipalities.

In 2011, BGN 3 602 859 from taxpayers' money went for such claims, which is about BGN half million more than 2010.

The data comes from the Supreme Judicial Council and was published by 24 Chassa (24 Hours) daily.

Bankers, military officers, and policemen are among the people who have won compensations from the State in Court since the beginning of 2012. Some of the claimants have passed away before learning the magistrates' rule.

People who are wrongly charged usually sue for inflicted public humiliation, harmed self-esteem, and deteriorating health.
