Namesake Wrongly Tangled in Bulgarian Armored Truck Theft

The Facebook picture shows businessman Georgi Enev who firmly denies having anything to do with the recent armored truck cash theft in Bulgaria except the same name as the suspect.

Georgi Enev, a man with the exact same name as the Bulgarian driver of the armored bank car transporting cash, who disappeared with a total of BGN 1.6 M, firmly denies any involvement in the crime.

The man called the largest private TV channel bTV to explain he is not a thief, but an honest businessman.

The hosts of the morning show were forced to apologize and admit the fact that the businessman's Facebook picture was shown during bTV's central Monday news broadcast instead of the one of the driver.

Also on Monday, the Opel Kadett owned by 33-year-old suspect Georgi Enev was discovered abandoned some 15 km away from the city of Plovdiv.

Authorities believe that he acted alone, used the car to escape and is still hiding in Bulgaria.

In latest developments, the most likely direction is the Rhodoppe Mountains. A gas station security camera clearly shows only one person inside the vehicle.

Police are also working on leads that he may have fled to Greece, Serbia or Western Europe. A Red Notice for his arrest is expected to be issued by Interpol, should Bulgarian authorities prove he has left the country.

Police in Plovdiv were alerted about an abandoned cash transporter on Friday, and upon arriving they also found that the vehicle was empty.

The car was stocked with the equivalent of BGN 1.6 M in various currencies.

Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, firmly rejected the possibility that Enev's theft is related to another one near the city of Lovech where BGN 2 M were stolen from another armored truck of the same security company G4S.

The Prosecutor's Office says the main lead in the cause of crime is unpaid debts.
