Sofia Throws Weight behind Project for Bulgarian Church in Jerusalem

Bulgaria's Foreign Ministry and the Embassy of Israel in Sofia have formally supported an initiative to build a Bulgarian church in Jerusalem.

The project has recently been unveiled by the Mayor of the Western Bulgarian city of Kyustendil Petar Paynov, and is expected to get the support of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church.

The rationale of the initiative committee is that Bulgaria is the only Christian and Orthodox nation to have no church in the Holy Land, the Bulgarian National Radio reported.

The closest Bulgaria came to building a church in Jerusalem was a project of the Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church in the 1930s, which even set up an account in a British bank. The project was terminated by the communist regime in the 1940s, and the British bank returned the funds after World War II.
