Greek citizens are voting Sunday on second snap parliamentary elections, after the initial May 6 vote failed to elect a government-forming Parliament.

Saturday overnight quares in Greek cities, including Athens' Omonia, were for the first time in a long period the site of festivities, after Greece made it to the second round of Euro 2012 after beating Russia 1:0.

But Sunday's general elections, which opened 7 am EET, are set to be crucial for the debt-ridden country, that has to implement further reforms and rein in its finances.

What complicates the situation even more is that lefist coalition SYRIZA, led by Alexis Tsipras, is expected to come out victorious in the vote.

Although not being eurosceptic and supporting Greece's participation in the eurozone, SYRIZA opposes Greece's copious bailout plans that have involved ravaging austerity measures.

European leaders have already expressed their strong hopes that the elections would be won by parties that respect the conditions of the plans.
