Sofia Subway to Take Passengers to 'EU'

The Sofia City Hall municipal council decided Thursday to rename three of the stops on the second subway line that is still under construction.

The stop, which was initially to be named St. Naum, will be called now European Union. It is in the vicinity of the Museum of Earth and People in downtown Sofia.

The stop near the St. Nedelya square is not going to be named after it, but Serdika, which is the name of the first stop on the first subway line.

The new stop on Tsarigradsko Shosse boulevard will be named Inter Expo Center – Tsarigradsko Shosse.

The renaming was requested by the CEO of the Metropolitan company, Stoyan Bratoev, on grounds of the need to have enough time for preparing the signs and the recordings announcing the stops on the metro trains.

The decision did not go without serious debates, with representatives of the opposition from the right and the left asking respectively to name the entire second line European Union and to name one of the stops on the first line in sign of gratitude for the Japanese bank, whose loan allowed the launch of its construction.
