Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak fell in a coma on Monday, a spokesman for the country's Interior Ministry said.

"Mubarak entered today into full coma. His two sons Gamal and Alaa submitted a request to the prison authority to move beside him and it has been accepted," ministry spokesman Alaa Mahmoud said, as cited by CNN.

"His health has been deteriorating since the verdict, with high blood pressure, problems breathing, and irregular heartbeat."

Gamal and Alaa Mubarak are in jail, facing charges of insider trading and money laundering.

Early June Hosni Mubarak was sentenced to life in prison for failing to prevent the killing of protesters in the 2011 uprising against his rule.

Some Egyptians welcomed the sentence, while others protested, being convinced that Mubarak must be convicted of intentional violence against his people, as well as of corruption.

Mubarak, 84, has been in a Cairo prison hospital ever since.
