Bulgaria Seeks License for Decommissioning Units 1, 2 of Kozloduy NPP

Bulgaria's State Enterprise 'Radioactive Waste' (SE-RAW) has already applied for a license for the decommissioning of units 1 and 2 of the Kozloduy NPP, according to the company CEO, Dilyan Petrov.

Petrov announced Monday that the documents had been submitted with the Nuclear Regulatory Agency last week.

"We are hoping that in nine months' time, if the statutory deadlines are observed, we shall have a license for the decommissioning of the two units and then the follow-up activities will continue as scheduled," he stated, as cited by news portal kozloduy-bg.

In December 2008, Bulgaria's Council of Ministers placed units 1 and 2 of the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant under the management of SE-RAW.

The 440-MW Soviet-era reactors 1 and 2 of the Kozloduy NPP were shut down in 2002 at the insistence of the EU (Units 3 and 4, which are of the same type, were turned off in 2006, leaving the Kozloduy plant only with two 1000-MW reactors in operation.)

In October 2010, SE-RAW acquired a 5-year license for the exploitation of units 1 and 2 as radioactive waste facilities.

Nearly 200 tons of oversized equipment has already been taken out of the Machine Room of the two units, and the operations are being systemically monitored by Delyan Dobrev, Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism.
