Bulgaria's corruption issues are not to be overestimated, according to Martin Kreutner, Chair of the Steering Committee of the International Anti-Corruption Academy.

"I do not think that Bulgaria is the most corrupted country. Bulgaria, like all other countries in the world, has to do its homework," Kreutner told the Bulgarian National Radio.

"Some states have more homework to do, others have less. Wherever there is power, there is abuse of power," he pointed out, adding that the Balkan country has certain special issues and problems that have to be tackled.

Kreutner commented on Bulgaria's Commission for Prevention and Ascertainment of Conflict of Interest, stating that it was created too recently for him to assess its work.

However, he said he expected the commission to yield positive results.

Bulgaria is the most corrupt among the EU Member States, according to Transparency International's latest Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) published in December 2011.

The Balkan country registered a score of 3.3, which has placed it 86th out of 178 countries together with Jamaica, Panama, Sri Lanka and Serbia.
