Abu Yahya al-Libi, who is believed to be al-Qaeda's second-in-command, has been allegedly killed in a US drone strike in Pakistan on Monday.

US officials says it is still unclear whether Libi was among those killed in the strike on a suspected militant compound in North Waziristan, near the Afghan border, BBC informs.

According to Pakistani officials, two missiles by the unmanned aircraft killed 15 people. The country's Foreign Ministry has condemned the strike, describing it as "illegal."

The New York Times has reminded that Libi has been falsely reported dead before — in December 2009 after a drone strike in South Waziristan.

The al-Qaeda commander who escaped American custody in 2005 became the group's deputy leader after Osama bin Laden's death in 2011.
