Bulgaria Welcomes Very Few Refugees, UNHCR in Sofia Says

Bulgaria has been welcoming very refugees in the past two decades, according to Boris Cheshirkov, a representative of the Sofia Office of UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

"The refugees who managed to reach Bulgaria in the past 20 years are a few thousand, and those who were actually granted refugee status are just a few," he told Focus Agency Saturday.

Cheshirkov pointed out that in 2011 Bulgaria granted refugee status to a total of 10 persons.

"The world has about 15 million refugees annually, so Bulgaria has a very small share. A refugee status indicates that a person claiming it told their story here, and the Bulgarian government believes that this story really makes them a refugee," he explained.
