Bulgaria’s Pironkova won a set against Franceska Schiavone in Thursday’s match at Roland Garros but failed to make a breakthrough by going to the third round of the Grand Slam tennis tournament.

Pironkova won the first set against Schiavone (the 2010 French Open women’s winner) but eventually lost the match 6:2, 3:6, 1:6.

Thus, the best Bulgarian female tennis player missed a great opportunity to bring a surprise and to make it to the third round of Roland Garros for the first time.

Italy’s Schiavone has scored the 499th win in her career, and has made it to the third round of French Open for a third consecutive time, 10th out of 12th participations overall.

Pironkova so far has failed to make it to the third round of a Grand Slam tournament in 24 out of 26 attempts, the notable exceptions being her two breakthroughs at Wimbledon.
