The tax agents of the Bulgarian National Revenue Agency in Sofia have uncovered tax evasion and fraud to the combined total of BGN 441.5 M, the institution announced Thursday.

These results are from tax inspections in the Bulgarian capital between January 1 and April 30, 2012.

Of the total tax evasion sum, the major share – estimated at BGN 353 M – comes from VAT fraud, while the tax inspectors also prevented the illegal allocation of tax credit worth BGN 12 M.

The National Revenue Agency also uncovered corporate tax evasion in Sofia worth BGN 55 M, and personal income tax evasion worth BGN 16 M. Unpaid social security fees were found to amount to BGN 4.5 M.

According to the Bulgarian tax authorities, wholesale trade is the most active sector in tax evasion in Sofia – a total of 339 wholesale traders were busted, accounting for almost BGN 150 M. Construction comes in second with BGN 117 M, while retailers' share is substantially smaller – BGN 18.6 M.

"The scope of the uncovered violations is worrying. That is why there is no sector of the economy that will slip from our sight. There will be no peaceful sleep for those violating the law and incurring losses to the state budget," declared Boyko Atanasov, directorate head at the NRA in Sofia.
