Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev has found out that God has been very well-disposed towards Bulgaria in terms of earthquakes over the past 60 years.

"The earthquakes registered over the last 60 years rather seem to show that God is Bulgarian," Plevneliev told reporters on Wednesday.

The President's comment followed the relatively strong quake that jolted the city of Pernik and the capital Sofia last Tuesday.

The phrase "God is Bulgarian" is believed to be coined by football commentator Nikolay Kolev, who shouted it on air after the Bulgarian national team's 2:1 away victory against France back in 1993.

On Wednesday, Plevneliev met with seismology experts from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

"What we learned today is that the earthquake in Italy and the earthquake in Bulgaria are completely unrelated even though they coincided. These are different processes," he said after the meeting, as cited by the Focus news agency.

Last week's earthquake in Bulgaria had a magnitude of 5.8 – 6.0 on the Richter scale.
