People who sustained property damage from the 5.9 magnitude on the Richter scale earthquake that shook western Bulgaria on May 22 will receive a onetime compensation of BGN 325 starting Thursday.

The information was reported Wednesday by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Simeon Djankov.

Social Minister, Totyu Mladenov, announced that about 1 600 claims have been submitted so far.

Speaking at the regularly scheduled Council of Ministers meeting, Djankov said that the total needed amount is close to BGN 900 000 and people from Pernik, Radomir, and nearby areas along with those from the Region of Sofia are eligible for compensations if they have already submitted claims. For those who have not done so yet, there will be a new decree next week.

PM, Boyko Borisov, assigned Mladenov with the task of delivering the needed amount in cash and on location by 8:30 am Thursday.

Djankov further reported that damages of the national infrastructure have been accessed below the initial forecast of BGN 10-20 M. The other Deputy PM, Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, said earlier Wednesday that BGN 3 M will be needed to repair public buildings in the city of Pernik, while the needed amount for Sofia is BGN 1.3 M.

The cabinet has already adopted a decree to slate BGN 5 M for the three most damaged daycare centers and one school in Pernik. Another daycare will be demolished.

People, whose homes are going to be demolished, will be provided temporarily with tents since all 33 trailers have already been distributed.
