UK Home Office has admitted it is considering steps to limit the wave of immigrants expected from Greece and other European Union in the wake of the euro crisis.

Speaking in an interview for The Daily Telegraph, Home Secretary Theresa May said "work is ongoing" to deal with large movements of people in the event of the break-up of the single currency, but declined to reveal any details.

Great Britain was the first European Union member states to officially prolong the temporary ban on Bulgarian and Romanian workers for two more years, until the beginning of 2014.

All other EU nationals however are largely entitled to live and work anywhere in the single market.

Theresa May said the government was "looking at the trends" on immigration from struggling European economies.

She said there was no evidence of increased migration at present, she added that it was "difficult to say how it is going to develop in coming weeks".

Asked whether emergency immigration controls are under consideration, Mrs May said: "It is right that we do some contingency planning on this (and) that is work that is ongoing."
