The United Nations Security Council has unanimously condemned the Syrian government for killing more than 100 civilians in Houla last week.

"The security council condemned in the strongest possible terms the killings, confirmed by United Nations observers, of dozens of men, women and children and the wounding of hundreds more ... in attacks that involved a series of government artillery and tank shellings on a residential neighbourhood," the security council has said in a non-binding statement.

The council member have called upon Syrian forces to "immediately cease the use of heavy weapons in population centers and immediately pull back its troops and its heavy weapons from in and around population centers and return them to their barracks."

The United Nations believes that at least 108 people were killed in Houla.

Troops loyal to President Bashar al-Assad raided the town of Houla, north-west of Homs, after an anti-government demonstration on Friday, murdering men, women, and children.

The killings were officially confirmed by international observers in reports of international news agencies.
