Speaking after a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti, Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev has stressed the importance of maintaining good bilateral relations in a period of crisis.

Plevneliev, who is on an official visit to the Vatican City, had a meeting with the Italian Prime Minister for an hour which he defined as very interesting and useful

The key topics on the agenda included important decisions for Europe, economic growth, energy liberalization, youth unemployment and the situation in Serbia and Greece.

"When we talk about growth, two things are important – growth is not a magic word and growth cannot be bought with new debts," Plevneliev told journalists, adding that growth could be achieved through reforms.

"When we talk about growth, we need to invite the next generation to the table," the Bulgarian President emphasized.

He said that he had reached agreement with Monti on the opinion that the solutions applied during the current period of crisis would define how Europe manages in the next period of crisis.

Plevneliev said that the Italian Prime Minister had praised Bulgaria for achieving remarkable progress.

"There are no easy solutions. Bulgaria did not increase salaries or increase pensions. What we did was to work for stability," Bulgaria's head of state observed.

He went on to define Italy as Bulgaria's second biggest economic partner.
