US State Dept: Roma Marginalization Looms Big in Bulgaria

The marginalization of the Roma community still remains the most pressing human rights issue in Bulgaria, according to the US Department of State's yearly human rights report.

The report mentions acts of violence against Roma, but also other minority communities, such as Muslims, by what it describes as far-right extremists.

Discrimination is still present in Buglaria, argues the US State Department, including against disabled people, HIV-positive individuals, and women.

Another set of human rights problems, according to the State Department, stems from corruption and lack of trust in the judicial system.

The human rights report also mentions what it labels as harsh conditions in detention facilities and prisons.
