Bulgaria's Pernik Still Collects Rubble afer Earthquake

Regular life in western Bulgarian city of Pernik has still not resumed, after it was shaken by a close to 6-degree earthquake early Tuesday.

"The municipal crisis headquarters still functions and monitors the situation," said Pernik mayor Rositsa Yanakieva, as quoted by the Focus Information Agency.

Thursday, which is an official holiday in Bulgaria, marking May 24, Day of Culture and Education, citizens of Pernik will continue to clean up their homes and collect rubble left behind from the tremors.

Chimeys have fallen, walls have cracked, objects at homes and stores have been broken, but fortunately no casualties or significant damages were incurred.

After the multiple more than 5-degree tremors in the wee hours Tuesday, residents of Pernik were comparatively calmer during the 4-degree aftershock at 1 am Thursday.

"We have to get ourselves together. Those two days were really shocking, but life goes on," said Pernik mayor Yanakieva.
