The candidate of the opposition, left-wing Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP, Georgi Rumenov, has won the Sunday mayoral runoff election in the southern Bulgarian town of Saedinenie.

The information was announced personally by Sergey Stanishev, the reelected leader of Bulgaria's main opposition formation, Chairman of the Party of European Socialists, PES, and former Prime Minister of Bulgaria.

The other top contender was the nominee of the ruling, center-right Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria party, GERB, Sasho Dinchiyski.

"We proved that GERB are not invincible," said Stanishev, speaking Monday in an interview for the Bulgarian National Television, BNT.

At the first round Dinchyiski received only 19 votes more than Rumenov.

The election had to be organized after a tragic incident in the fall of 2011 when the Mayor of Saedinenie, Evgeniy Marincheshki, died in a traffic accident.
