Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti has declared that his government is determined to fight crime and not allow the country returned to its violent and "subversive" past.

Monti's written statement followed a bomb explosion that took place on Saturday outside a school in the southern Italian city of Brindisi. The blast killed one 16-year-old girl and injured at least seven others.

The Italian Prime Minister, who is currently in the US for a Group of Eight summit, has stated his government will combat "all types of crime," seeking to to prevent a return to Italy's violent and "subversive" past, marked by Mafia car bombings and politically motivated murders, international media report.

Monti has offered his condolences to the victim's family and to everyone hurt in the attack.
