Romania has not started researching and exploring its shale gas resources, Bulgarian Environment Minister Nona Karadzhova told her country's Parliament on Friday.

In an answer to an MP's question, Karadzhova reminded Romania is obliged to inform Bulgaria about its shale gas activities under EU legislation and the Bulgarian Environment Ministry.

Bucharest has also answered a Bulgarian inquiry, stating that no shale gas procedures have been launched in the country.

The Romanian authorities say the country agrees that shale gas research and extraction are potentially dangerous for the environment and should only occur once a detailed environmental assessment has been made.

A potential shale gas extraction in Southern Romania could turn out to be harmful for underground waters in the Bulgarian region of Southern Dobrudzha.

On January 18 the Bulgarian Parliament passed a moratorium on the hydraulic fracturing technology used in shale gas research and extraction.
