A minivan and a car with a load of valuable antiques were discovered by Customs officers overnight at the Zlatograd cross border checkpoint on the Bulgarian-Greek border.

The vehicles contained about 131 antique objects mixed with a number of cheap jewelry. They travelled from Germany to Turkey.

The minivan had German license plates and was driven by a Turkish citizen, residing in Germany. The car had Bulgarian registration (from the southern city of Kardzhali) and driver, but the two travelled together.

Scores of cardboard boxes were discovere, containing different antique, mostly metal, objects and over 8 kg of gold and silver jewelry with very high value, along with a ceramic phallic symbol, a statue of a woman playing the flute, and bone and leather amulets.
