Bulgaria is wrong to think that low salaries and taxes are enough to make it globally competitive, stated French Ambassador in Sofia Philippe Autie.

"In a global world, you can always find a country with lower salaries and taxes," said the envoy, speaking in an interview for Darik Radio.

Autie urged for more spending in education, which according to him is one of the main levers to ensure growth.

"A country's strategy for better competitiveness must be based foremost on education and acquisition of skills," said the ambassador of France.

Autie commented that the European Union must also think harder how to stimulate growth and boost competitiveness.

"Contrary to what some believe, newly elected French President Francois Hollande does not want to revise the EU Financial Stability Pact, he just wants to add growth on the agenda," said he.

"We must stop opposing financial discipline to growth. If we do not manage to do that, there will be no success for Europe," stated the diplomat.

According to Autie, no change of French foreign policy, including with regard to Bulgaria, is to be expected following Hollande's assuming office.

He added that he expects a fruitful collaboration between the new French President and German Chancellor Angela Merkel that will continue her good work with Nicolas Sarkozy.
