Bulgaria will pay slightly above EUR 7 M to the World Bank (WB) for consultancy services on the preparation of several strategic documents in three sectors.

The sum of EUR 7 M will be provided from the money earmarked for technical assistance under a number of operational programs.

The step was approved by the government on Wednesday.

In the beginning of 2012, the center-right GERB government signed an agreement with the World Bank for analytical and consultancy services aimed at fast-tracking the EU funds absorption in Bulgaria.

The World Bank will be paid EUR 4 M to consult Bulgaria on the re-writing of the road safety strategy.

The WB's consultancy services on the reform strategy in the water supply and sewerage sector (WSS) will cost EUR 1.7 M.

The international financial institution has experience in Bulgaria's WSS sector.

In 2005, the World Bank issued a report evaluating the cost of all necessary improvements in water management in Bulgaria.

The 2005 report of the WB indicated that Bulgaria needed some EUR 7 B to complete and modernize the water supply and sewerage system and build the necessary additional drinking water reservoirs.

The WB will also receive EUR 1.321 M to draft a strategy for innovations in Bulgaria and for a number of other initiatives in the sector.
