Jailed Ukraine opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko has arrived at a hospital in Kharkiv to be treated for back pain by a German doctor, reports say.

Eyewitnesses said Tymoshenko, a former PM, was taken to a side entrance of the hospital in a heavily guarded convoy.

She has been on hunger strike after accusing prison guards of beating her during an earlier attempt to move her to hospital.

Concern over her treatment has caused diplomatic tensions within the EU.

Tymoshenko is expected to end her 19-day hunger strike after agreeing to be hospitalised under the supervision of German doctor Lutz Harms, her daughter Yevgenia has stated.

The former Ukrainian PM launched a hunger strike to protest her alleged ill-treatment in jail, where she is serving a seven-year sentence. She has been sentenced for abuse of power for making a gas supply contract with Russia in 2009, after the Russian-Ukrainian gas crisis; she herself claims that her political rival, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych is using the country's judiciary to punish her.

Ukraine has postponed the Central European Summit scheduled to take place in Yalta on May 11-12 after several European leaders announced a boycott over concerns about the treatment of Tymoshenko.

The attendance of leaders at 2012 football matches in Ukraine next month has also been put under question.
