A 45-year-old director of a nursery school in Bulgaria's Varna has been arrested with a bribe of BGN 700 (EUR 340), which is more than twice the minimum monthly salary in the country (ЕUR 150).

Diana Agop Kuneva, who is in charge of the Iglika nursery school in the Troshevo quarter in the Black Sea city of Varna, was busted on Thursday with the bribe in a police operation, announced Varna District Prosecutor Vladimir Chavdarov.

The police were tipped off about Kuneva's bribe demand by the mother of a two-year-old on Wednesday.

The nursery school head demanded the money so that she would enroll the kid – a bribe demand that brings up a major problem in Bulgaria's overcrowded bigger cities such as Sofia and Varna which are experiencing a shortage of nursery school and kindergarten capacity.

The head of the Varna Police Directorate Commissar Dimitar Dimitrov said the nursery school director was busted with banknotes that had been marked by the police.

Diana Kuneva has been arrested for 24 hours; she is under investigation, and could be sentenced to up to 6 years in jail.
